Operator Renewal Information

Wastewater Certification Renewal Information

All certified wastewater treatment and collection operators are required to renew their certificate(s) every odd-numbered year. Renewal of wastewater treatment certificates that are currently in good standing shall be made between March 7, 2009 and June 30, 2009. Continuing education credits for renewal purposes must be earned prior to the submittal of the application for renewal.

When renewing through the cabinet's Web site, some wastewater operators may receive a message that they "cannot pay." One reason this message is displayed is if a wastewater operator has hours available that overlap renewal cycles, then those hours have to be manually checked by certification staff to make sure they were not used during the previous renewal cycle. If you fall into this category, contact the Certification and Licensing Program at 800-926-8111. Certification staff can verify your remaining hours, and if you meet the continuing education requirement, they will override the system so that you can pay online.

The fee for renewal is $50 if renewed through the cabinet's Web site or $100 if not renewed through the cabinet Web site (must be postmarked by June 30, 2009). On July 1, 2009, there will be a late fee assessed in the amount of $250, in addition to the renewal fee. If renewal is not submitted through the cabinet Web site, the operator must complete the Application for Certification Renewal.

Drinking Water Certification Renewal Information

All certified water treatment and water distribution operators are required to renew their certificate(s) every even-numbered year. The next drinking water renewal cycle is Jan. 1, 2010 through June 30, 2010. Continuing education credits for renewal purposes must be earned prior to the submittal of the application for renewal.

Online renewal is now available for operators who wish to pay with a credit or debit card. To access the online renewal page go to the online renewal box on this page and click on the link to e-Search. The attached document will give you easy-to-follow instructions on how to complete your online renewal.

*NOTE*
Water treatment and water distribution operators that work for an ERG-eligible facility cannot renew online. These operators will need to submit a renewal form.

If operators are not sure if their facility is ERG eligible, the following link will provide a list of these facilities.

ERG-Eligible Facilities

The fee for renewal is $35 per certificate. If the renewal is mailed and postmarked by June 30, 2008, the fee is $35. On July 1, 2008, there will be a late fee assessed in the amount of $35, in addition to the $35 renewal fee. Operators are responsible for paying the renewal fee and initiating the renewal process by completing and submitting the Application for Renewal form. The form can also be found in the 2008 Operator Certification Training Catalog.

All renewal checks that are sent to operator certification should be made payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer and mailed to:

Continuing Education Requirements

Every certified operator is required to complete continuing education hours for renewal of their certificates. These courses must be board-approved courses. The list of approved courses can be found at the following link. The list will be updated as additional courses are approved by the certification boards. Wastewater operators are required to earn at least half of the continuing education hours in process control.

Drinking water operators holding separate treatment and distribution certificates are required to earn enough hours to satisfy only the highest classified certificate. Outlined below are the continuing education training hours required of each classification for each renewal period (two years).
